East Meets West:
Fusion of Diverse Actors and New Material [p.4]

“I had a young Vietnamese person contact me from the Virgin Islands telling me they love the stuff I’m doing,” Phan said. “It really touches me because I never had any role models growing up.”

Though he has had some differences with the approaches taken by older Vietnamese Americans in the arts and entertainment business, he has tremendous respect and has learned a great deal from them. He feels what he has learned will help him pave the way for a movement for the younger generation of all cultures to integrate and assimilate to each other for a more tolerable society.

“What I learned from the older Vietnamese generation is they’re amazing survivors,” Phan said. “If there’s anything I can take away from them is that they survived. They left a war torn country and came here and learned the language to pay for their children to be educated and become very successful. They came to a country where they are a minority and have become successful. I learned from the older generation the discipline and to survive at all costs without hurting other people.”

He is making a conscious effort to bridge this gap between the generations and be someone younger Vietnamese Americans can relate to. Phan is looking forward to connecting with the younger Vietnamese generation in community organizations or in their colleges and universities.

“They can help us grow, regardless of their ethnicity, to join us on this crusade to make this movement happen,” Phan said.

With this new project underway where East really does meets West and the fusion of diverse actors and stories share a common stage, Phan hopes to mobilize people all over the world to support his show.

Could the “East Meets West Comedy Show” be the next “In Living Color” of today’s one point five and second generation Vietnamese Americans? Phan thinks it is very possible.

The next live taping of the second pilot of “East Meets West Comedy Show” is November 7 at Tangent Entertainment in La Jolla. The DVD shoot of “East Meets West” will be on December 16.
